COURTENAY PLACE
THE NEW TRAM SHELTER,
SAVING THE TREES.
The position of the Courtenay Place waiting shed as put hy Mr M. Cable t manager of tramways to a nines'* representative yesterday is such that most of the trees surrounding the existing building will have to go when the council's plan for a new edifice is proceeded with. There has been considerable feeling aroused in the city hy the intimation that the beautiful trees are to be sacrificed when oncetho new scheme is put in hand. The work, ot couiso, will r,ot bo done for some considerable time yet, even if it appears on the new estimates brought down early in the next financial year latter March. 31st, 1924). The position of Courtenay Place has long been a matter of serious concern to the council. Various proposals have been made in the past to render the locality more safe, and since the decision to route all vehicular traffic to the north side of the oasis it has been determined that a double-sided waiting-shed should be erected. The southerli-bound oars are to be sens to the northern side of the shed, which will involve the relaying of the tracks at the end of the place, cud will mean that cars will pass the shelter routes only one way on each side. This plan can scarcely be carried out without sacrificing the plantation, explained Mr M. Cable to a ‘N.Z. Times” reporter yesterday. There may bo trees at either end of the new shed, of course, but those at the back of tho existing shelter cannot stand if the present proposal is proceeded with. It has been suggested by Councillor W. J. Thompson, chairman of the, reserves committee, that those trees which are not required in Courtenay Place should be removed elsewhere. Tliis transplanting it is said, is quite feasible and when the alterations are put in hand the trees may he sent to a suitable spot.
