Brussels correspondent of “The Times’’ reports a unique tribute to , Belgian journalism, when citizens of all classes assembled in large numbers to honour the clandestine Press which carried on publication under the German occupation. Members of the ■— Cabinet paid tributes to the journal "ista who laid down their pens rathe? ' than consent to submit to work under enemy censorship. Statistics prove that under the occupation nearly 250 clandestine newspapers were published in Belgium. In spite of daily searches by the German police a newspaper appeared in the majority of towns and helped to sustain the morale of the population. The publication, however, led to the infliction of numerous sentences. Many workers on these pipers died in prison. Some were shot.
