RUNAWAY MOTOR-VAN

COLLIDES WITH TRAMCAR. A FORTUNATE ESCAPE. An unusual case was heard at the Police Court yesterday afternoon, when Jack Morgan was charged with failing to properly manage a motor delivery van he had been driving. Mr L. C. Hemery, assistant-city solicitor, stated that the defendant left the motor van outside the Self-Help Co-operative store in Mulgrave street. The street was a steep one, and while the defendant was in the shop the vehicle gathered up speed, ran down Mulgrave street, and, after crossing the tram lines at the bottom, crashed into a tramcar. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and the damage done to the tram and the Van was Sight. Mr Hemery declared that there wore several reasons to account for the van moving off—the brake might have been ineffective, or the defendant had forgotten to turn the front wheels of the van in towards the kerb, a necessary precaution* on a steep road. Evidence was given by » city inspector, who stated that the grade of the street was about 1 in 11. The witness had interviewed the defendant, who, however, had no explanation to make.

His Worship (Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.) imposed a fine of 10s and costs On the defendant.
