PRIGES OF TIMBER
WELLINGTON AND AUCKLAND. REPLY TO MR MAINLAND. (Special to N.Z. “Times”). AUCKLAND, December- 16. With reference to the comparison of timber prices ruling in Wellington and Auckland made by Mr H. Mainland, Mr L. D. Stewart, secretary of the Auckland Sawmilleis’ Association, says: “It is always very difficult to. compare prices between different centres on account of differences in grading and conditions, but if Mr Mainland lias been correctly reported bo must be labouring under sonic serious misapprehension. Two examples will serve to convince. For instance, he quotes, per 100 feet, super, 0.8. Scantling: Wellington 28s, Auckland 36s 6d. The correct Auckland price for this ex yard is 2os Gd, or Its less than quoted. But there is this further difference that in the south rf New Zealand 0.8. quality is only equal to Auckland second quality, which is sold a-t 21s, or 15s <3d less than the Wellington price. First kauri is quoted : Wellington 70s, Auckland 60s. Tho above 60s is the correct -basis for Auckland, but tho Wellington price is 88s, or 28s more than Auckland. Again, in Auckland the price of first-class kauri, 6. 7,3, and 9 x } is 50s, as against Wellington’s price of 845.”
