MEETING OF RESIDENTS. PROPOSED PUBLIC HALL. A meeting of the residents of the Mornington district was held last night, to discuss the question of building a public hall. The meeting was presided over r>y Mr A. G. Cathie, who stated that the Wellington City Council Empowering Bill gave the district power to rate itself ~ for the purpose of building a hall. If the meeting approved of that, then the City Council would circularise the district and have u poll of tho ratepayers’ taken. If a majority rote! in favour of the proposal, then the work would be proceeded with. _ , .
Several ratepayers expressed their opinion that such a hall as it wse proposed to build, would not pay its way. but Mr Cathie declared that the ratepayers would not be tied down to any motion that might be paased at the meeting, but would have an opportun ity of voting for or against the proposal at tho poll. After some discussion it was moved that a vote of the district bo taken hy the City Council for the purpose of erecting a public hall, the groan cost not to exceed £2OOO, and tne building to be erected on the Vennols street site, or in the vicinity. Tho motion was seconded and carried on a show ef hands.
