MANAWATU CUP AND SPRINT (By “Carbine.”) The field for the Manawatu Cup will not be very large, but the quality is satisfactory To have the field not above moderate size will be an advantage and make for a better race. Mark Time holds the place of honour at the head of the handicap, and Mr Henrys dees not seem to have been harsh on nim in giving him 9 stone after the manner in which he won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap with 8.6 on his back. Mark Time won the race in very convincing fashion and beat Surveyor, from whom he was in receipt of 10Ib. The King Mark gelding is not as good as Surveyor, but ho is a decidedly useful handicap horse. Next on the list is the Masterton mare Bonetter. who followed Pilliewinki© home in the Metropolitan and defeated Deucalion in the Feudal ton Bonetter's best distance is a mile and a quarter, and she may not be uite up to 8.9 at a mile and a half. Her stable mate, Trespass, gets in with 7.13, but on his recent running he cannot be recommended. Ngata (5.8.), being a Wanganui Cup winner, cannot be suspected' of inability to go the distance. He carried i 7.13 in the Wanganui Cup and won in crock time. Deucalion (8.8) is a good horse when well, and reports from the south crqedit him with having done excellent work of late. On his running in the New Zealand Cup, when he was not ready, he should be looked to to play an important part in the finish at Awapuni on Boxing Day. If Admiral Codrington can go a mile and a half he is well treated in being asked to carry only 7.10. Scotch Mixture (7.8) has been going to win a race far some time and has been given a chance. PrinI temps (7.2) will not be fancied over a j mile and) a half, but the bottom weights , —Little River, Helen Rufus and Megan—- • all hava chances. Opinions :mav nave to be altered between now and the day of the race, but at present it seems that reasonable chances are possessed by Admiral Codrington, Mark Time, Ngata, Deucalion and Scotch Mixture. The Fitzherbert Handicap does r.ut appear to bo so open, and, *7f the track is m good order, it will come as a surprise if Rational, Lady Fingers and Sunny Loch do not run good races. Outi side of these the best may be Santonio. NOTES AMD COMMENTS W. Cjf. Hobbs is booked for a trip south for the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, where he will race Paxestrina and Wink, who may be accompanied by a two-year* old, probably Jubilant, a half-sister to the other pair. Palestrina and SVinfc will also be nominated for the Wyndham and Invercargill meetings. After being spelled einco the Tiraaru meeting, Boadicea bag been recommissioned by R. Emerson, aDd will sport silk again early in the new year. Vaccination, who opened her winning account in the Trial Plate at Taumarunui, and later in the same day won again, is a four-year-old daughter of Arcbiestown and Mangamario, owned by Mr V. M. Gray. The Invercargill correspondent of “The Press" states that no horses working on the local track show more improvement than Fmncaise and Boughleen Dhoijn. Both are very well, and .look likely winners at the coming holiday meetings. A number of Riccarton trainers will take teams to the West Coast for the holiday meetings. There was talk at one stage of a very biff crowd of horses making the trip, but though the number may not be up to early expectations, those under orders for the Coast look a useful lot, likely to pick up a fair share of the prize money. F. D. Jones is handling a couple of two-year-olds, who will carry Mr H. A. Knight's colours later on. They are a gelding by Gay Lad from Majeetikoff and a filly by Greyspear from Chantiese. Cerberus is making a good recovery from the injuries lie received in a hurdle race at Riccarton last month. He shows little evidence of uneoundness, and it is hoped that he will be all right in a few weeks. Though Pakoti only managed to pull her many backers in the Stewards' Handicap at Waikato through by a neck, there was great merit in her performance. In the eary stages she opened up a big advantage, but three furlongs from home lost her place through a baa break. Then Huon Grattan looked a certain winner, but by a great finishing effort Pakoti iust got up in timo to head him in the last few strides. Wild Berry, by Balboa, from the imported mare Wild Oats, was on the Invercargill track one recent morning, and showed ability to sprint fast by thoroughly extending Andante in a halfmile run. She is owned by Mr J. Graham, and goes into F. Ellis's stable this week. A Melbourne writer states that J. McCann, whose health, broke down on his return from the Dominion, is improving, and he will shortly leave the private hospital and return home to Caulfield. Although Captain Tahu Rhodes's two-year-old filly Gay Queen, by Gay Lad— Red Oueen, has beep nominated for the Dunedin meeting, it is doubtful if she will make the trip to Wingatui. W. G. Hobbs may decide to keep her for the Wellington Racing Club's fixture next month, by which time her owner should be back in the Dominion to see her race. The well-known jockey F. E. Jones contemplates taking up hi* residence at Riccarton again with a view to devoting bis attention to race riding. He served his apprenticeship at Riccarton. with the late D. Cutts, and during that time h-* rode a large number of winners. He subsequently became first jockey for Sir George Clifford's stable, retaining that position for a number of years. Later no became identified with the trotting sport, as a rider and then as a trainer. Eventually he removed to South Canterbury. where he trained gallopers and trotters for a time, but he decided to devote his full attention to the trotters and pacers. After a few years 7ie took out a jockey's license again, and during the last season or two he has occasionally ridden gallopers. Hi® intention now is to come back to the galloping sport altogether. Ho can go to scale at Bsfc 31b. ON THE BEACH.—Good snaps—good results with ILLINGWORTH ROLL FTLMS. Best on the market. AM

THE FIRBT TOTE CARRIED ON A CART AT RIOCARTON. Outside tlio horse there is no question that to-day in tlio sport of racing the moot important item is the totalisator Not only with the public, but with the clubs, is the result of the working of the automatic record sr of odds a source of much concern, because the future of racing in New Zealand, if nowhere else, that is if the sport is to retain its present high standard, depends for its very existence upon the amount passed through the machines at the various meetings But is was not always, so, says the Auckland 4 'Star/* 3 and time was when the bookmakers, now banished from the course in the Dominion, controlled the betting on horse racing, but that was long ago, although subsequent to the introduction of the tote, the bookies and machine competed against each other. Like everything else the totalisator has been revolutionised and those who were present in the Dominion over forty years ago must wonder at the wonderful improvement made in “totes" when they compare the present day ©iectrio machine with the “tote" of the ’eighties. The introduction of the totalisator to New Zealand took place way back in 1830, and was first tried by the Canterbury Jockey Clulb. Prior to this all betting had been done with the bookmakers, and' naturally much curiosity was evinced in the introduction of the tote, which eventually was to oust the penciller from the raceoourses of the Dominion. On the occasion referred to the late Mr G. G. Stead was chairman and treasurer of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and a model pari-mutuel was exhibited and submitted to him by a Mr Prams. Mr Stead decided to give the tote a trial, and at the end of the first year's working a profit of was shewn. The machine was only a small affair, worked, by hand, and very often located on a cart on the course. The same machine would be carted from meeting to meeting, but in those days there was nothing like the volume of betting that is chronicled now, and the day's turnover in the 'eighties and very much later would not be the equal of what any fairly well backed horse would carry now in a race.

Gradually the totaUsator was improved upon until to-day we have the electric machine which records every investment ns ih-T ticket is issued, ana no matter how many tickets are taken on a -horse at the same moment ell are recorded correctly and simultaneously. Not all clubs have the electric tete fmetalled, but the time is hot far distant when it will be compulsory for them to do so, except in the case of small clubs whose meetings do not warrant such, an expense being incurred. A few years ago the double tote was trijd on the principal courses in the Dominion, but though greatly favoured by the 'betting public, the clubs decided for some reason or other to drop it.
