WANGANUI WOOL SALE

CO-OPERATION AND CONTROL. OPINIONS OF MR POLSON. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, December 17. Discussing tho notion of the Wool Committee in regard to the Wanganui wool sale, Mr W. J. Poison states: “I am generally favourable to co-opera-tion arid control, because I believe it to be in the best interests of growers; also, I think that some measure of control would be beneficial to the wool industry. Brokers inform me there frequently is> a slackening off in bidding when orders are filled. The larger the offering tho sooner slackening off takes place. It is one thing to control an industry when there i» an authorised mandate from the producers concerned on the statute book, hut another to attempt control without the Wool Committee set up by the Producers’ Committee three years ago, when the slump was at its height, to assist Bawra to stabilise wool prices. It was a, sub-committee, and producers reported to it. As the producers have not met for five years, I think the Wool Committee has a- questionable claim to represent the wool-growers. They, unlike other bodies, expressed themselves definitely opposed to control. Possibly, thev are still of the same mind. If such is the case, they have tho right to object to control now. It is tho duty of the Government to put the matter upon a more satisfactorv basis.”

iTe wa& satisfied till ab producers nqver contemplated the Wool Committee continuing in existence and controlling sales in perpetuity. It is acting under no apparent mandate than an obsolete “Gazette”, notice. Its present action ie more likely t-o prejudice Wanganui and to benefit Wellington tlian to assist producers to obtain better prices for wool.
