NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Carbine.”,) Only one more meeting before Christmas—Waipa. Manawatu and Auckland acceptances close to-day. Nominations for the Wellington Trots are due on Wednesday next. If Deuealion takes on the Manawatu Cup he will be hard to beat. As Razzle Dazzle is none too easy t<* keep on her feet now that the tracks arc hard, it will come as no surprise if slit is dropped out of the Railway and reserved for the classics. That was not Kilbird's form at Dannevirke. J. O'Shea will ride Royal Box in the Te Awamutu Cup, Tarleton in the Ohaupo Handicap, and Finelli or Golden Bubble in the Flying. Hipo looked to have little to beat in the open six furlongs event at Taumarunui, but in the end Tinokaha defeated him by a neck. Hipo was an ever money favourite. Vaccination paid two limit dividend:at Taumarunui. Arizona Maid and Irene Bruce, who ran first and second at Taumarunui, carried almost exactly the same amount of money on the machine. There was a big rush to be on Swallowflight at Dannevirke, but the race fell to Radiae, who was unlucky at Feilding. In the first five races at Taumarunui there were big dividends, but the next three were small, including a Gloaming price by Black Cruiser. The latest Christchurch files are interesting respecting certain Auckland Cup candidates. The "Lyttelton Times" says"R. W. King had the members oi his team nominated for the Auckland. Manawatu and Dunedin meetings. He has now arranged to race Pilliewinkic and Many Kittle at Auckland, and he will take the pair north on Saturday. Deucalion xna y be seen at the Manawatu or the Dunedin fixture.” The ''Sun” says:—"Many Kittle anr Pilliewinkioige north in charge of theitrainer, R. W. King, on Saturday. Thformer's mission is likely to be the Auckland Cup, while Pilliewinkie will conte.* some of the chief handicap events at th» A.K.C. gathering.” There is a disposition in some quarters to fancy tho chance of Many Kittle in the Auckland Cup (says the "Lyttelton" Times”). At his beet he represents top class up to a mile and a quarter, but he has to be taken on trust for a two-mile journey. Gloaming has got through a lot of useful work lately, and in addition to steady pacing ha 6 been allowed to move along bit over a furlong or two. So far ho ; is* quite sound, and everything points ,to his standing up to a prepax action for iprint races in tho autumn. •Barn Owl pulled up lame aftor working jon Monday. The trouble i* in the near foreleg, and it will necessitate a spell. F. D. Jones is now on his way to Auckland with the three-yenr-olda Ballymena and Murihaupo. So far no rider has been secured for Ballymena in the Auckland Cup. .Nothing definite hae been arranged, either, regarding a pilot for Murihaup/o in the Railway Handicap. but Jones hopes to secure R. S. Bagby. P. V. Mason ig en route to Auckland with Parody and Gold Town. H. Outts will leave Riccarton for Auckland to-morrow. Consequent on Barn Owl being amiss, he will have only Winning Hit, Wild Hind, and Viewpoint under his charge. Glentruin will not make the trip to Bllerslie. It is probable that the imported mare will nave her next race at Trentham, in the Waterloo Stakes, the race in which R%azzle Dazzle beat her last season. In the meantime Glentruin is getting through light tasks. Senorita, a two-year-old sister to Owlscombe, by Autmmnus from Glenowlet. has arrived at Riccarton from Stonyhurst, and has joined Cutts Brothers' team The three-year-old Rich Prize, by Antagonist from Sailor's Hope, who went amiss some time ago, has been sent to the Stonyhurst stud for a spell. The Reaver, who was sold to Mr W. Parsons recently, has left F D. Jones's stable, and is now under the care of S. Trilford. The three-year-old gelding Solferite, by Solferino from Haiina, wa« very sore when he raced at Methven on Saturday, and the race on the hard track did not improve matters. He is to be turned out for a few months' speJl. Tho two Otago cracks, Roseday and Loughrea, have been nominated for the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting. Dr W. H. Lang, whose death is reported from Melbourne, was very widely known in racing circles throughout Australia. He had aoted as handicapper to the Victoria Racing Club for a few years. Apart from this official position, however, he was a recognised authority on breeding. As "Fife and Drum,” in the "Pastoral Review,” and "Teviotdale,” in the "Australasian,” he reached a wide circle of readers, and his entertaining articles on racing, especially on breeding questions, will be greatly missed. Word from Wanganui say* that Mr Geo. Currie lias not decided whether he will send his yearlings to Australia for the next ealea or have another sale at bis homestead. Bays a writer in the "New Zealand Herald”:—"The ruling out of Mr R. Hannon's pair, Quinetxe and Abbey Bell, in connection with the Ruakura Stakes

APPROACH OF THE CHRISTMAS MEETINGS

at the recent Hamilton meeting will, it is stated, form the subject of an appeal to the Racing Conference. From what has transpired, it seems to be clearly established that Mr Hannon was officially advised that tho apprentice allowance could bo claimed for Quinette and Abbey Bell, and it may, I think, be assumed vhat the Waikato owner will depond largely on that in appealing to the Racing Conference.” Alth>agh Veil wag entered for the sprint events at Ellerslie, ehe will not he taken north, and this means that W. Rayner will have only Motley to represent his stable at the Auckland meeting. Absurd—Pennon filly has given evidence of being very brilliant over five furlongs, atic\, it is thought she will stay out the extra furlong in the Foal Stakes all right, as she is always running on well at the end of her gallops. Veil looks well and is moving nicely, but will probably be more at home in the company she will meet at Marton than she would be in the big sprint at Ellerslie, though she wr,s let in at the minimum. H. GRAY RETURNING Private advice I received during the week is to tho effect that Hector Gray is at present on his way to New Zealand. He will stay here a while and then return to England under engagement to Sir H. Cunliffe Owen for the next English season. Gray will ride while in New Zealand and may be in the saddi* at the Wellington Cup meeting. AUCKLAND RACES SCRATCHING S AND PENALTIES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 13. MANAWATU RACEB One of the chief attractions during, the Christmas holidays is the Mah&wntu Racing Club's summer meeting at Awapuni. Special' trains will be provided to convey patrons to and from the course, aDd good sport is assured. Excellent nominations have been received, and. the best handicap horses in the Dominion will be seen in competition at the meeting. The meeting ’is a popular one, and as every effort is being made by the officials of the club to provide facilities that will tend to enhance the enjoyment of the outing a record attendance is confidently expected.
