The Republicans are seeking to catch the votes of the farmers, who are l at present dissatisfied, by offering them a programme including a great canal system from Chicago to New Orleans. Central and Western fanners are now handicapped in delivering _ their crops for Europe and the Atlantic seaboard cities, and the transport will be reduced to one-third by a waterway connecting the Mississippi with the Great Lakes.
