NEW ZEALAND HOSPITALS
“MAINTAIN THEIR EFFICIENCY.” A strong plea for maintaining the efficiency of New Zealand’s hospitals was made by Mr F. Castle, chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board, at the meeting yesterday. One of the most striking passages in Dr. Wilson’s report of his recent visit to the United States, he 6aid, was that in which it was stated that the free municipal hospitals were not so efficient as the institutions run for those people who paid for their treatment. This was always found to be the case, and New Zealand hospital authorities should he careful that by not insisting strongly enough on the payment of fees, they did not allow things to drift into a condition similar to the infirmary system in England. There was a strong section of opinion which maintained that because people paid rates to the hospital, they should not pay fees; hut the dua? system of raising revenue had beet found to produce the most efficienhospital system.
