Following an ambush in which one officer and 10 soldiers were killed, the situation in Mindanao (Philippines) is becoming increasingly menacing. Millie no actual encounter between the Government troops and the rebels is yet reported, the Lanao and Cotahato districts are affected by a warlike frenzy. _ General Leonard Wood, the Gover-nor-General, who has assumed the personal direction of tlio dissatisfied districts, has made repeated efforts to negotiate with the insurgents in the hope of avoiding wholesale bloodshed, but the Moros are evidently detm mined to resort to war. Consequently General Wood has ordered the immediate mobilisation aDd dispatch of largo constabulary reinforcements to the disaffected districts. The revolt is attributed, first, to Moro hostility to the Filipino methods, and officialdom, tire compulsory education of girls, and interference with religious customs, especially polygamy; second, to ihe withdrawal of American officials and garrisons, and tho substitution of Filipino troops; and third, to the reflection of the general political disturbance throughout the islands produced by the independence propa ganda. and the repeated attacks on American sovereignty, and the Gover-nor-General’:! prerogatives.
