Y.M.C.A. FUNCTION

EDUCATIONAL BANQUET.

At the second annual educational banquet under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A., the Director of Education (Mr J. Cauhgley, M.A.) presided ovei a representative gathering. Speaking to the toast of the Y.M.C.A. educational policy, Mr Caughley said that the triangle symbol of the institution stood for an allround life, physically, intellectually, and spiritually. Life was a reaction upon the environment, and refusal to react was, to be dead. The tendency to-day, he said, was towards specialisation, and the work, of the Y.M.C.A. classes (because they do not trench toe much on the work of other organisations) did much to remove many of the dangers attendant upon this specialisation. The Y.M.C.A. was to be congratulated on its enterprise and the greatness of the results obtained. Other toasts honoured were: “The King,” “Advertising and Business Letters’’ (proposed by Mr G. Mitchell, and replied to by Messrs D. Todd and C. Russell); “Forensic Club, Public Speaking, and Salesmanship” (proposed by Mr E. P. Hay, and replied to by Messrs AV. A. Ramsay, A. Martin, N. K. “Y Luncheon Club” (proposed by Mr H. D. Bennett, replied to by Messrs T. Auton, F. Downes, J. H. Hunt); “Hobbies Club” (proposed by Mr R. G. Denton, replied to by Sir E. C. Dearman); and “Our Instructors” (proposed by Mr R. S. Maunder). Items were contributed by Messrs R. Brown, Byron Brown, and L. M. Hunter.
