MEMORIAL TO JOHN FORREST. MR BRUCE’S TRIBUTE. Renters Telegram. (Received October 11, 5.5 p.m.) I/DNDON, October 10. In the presence of a distinguished gathering at the chapel of Saint Michael and St. George, in St. Paul’s Cathedral, a memorial to the late Sir John Forrest was handed over to the Dean of the Chapter. The ceremony was most impressive. Mr Stanley Bruce, Federal Prime Minister, in a tribute to Sir John Forrest, described him as “one of Australia’s greatest sons,” who had played a (great part in the opening up of vast unpeopled areas in the dominions. Sir John Forrest took a prominent part in the exploration of the interior of Australia, travelling on one occasion 2000 miles with Horses only. From 1883 he was Commissioner of Crown Lands, and Suveyor-General in Western Australia, and in 1890 the fiist Premier. H* introduced the system of giving a free grant of 160 acres of lands to ibona fide settlors. Jn 1901 he relinquished the Premiership In order to enter tbe Federal Cabinet, of wbiah he was a member almost continuously up to the time of his death.
