FORCIBLE ARGUMENTS

MR McVILLY ON “THE OTHER SIDE.” “I recognise the force of yonr argument, but I would direct attention to the other side,” said Mr McVilly to a deputation in New Plymouth in reference to the charges made on the Breakwater-New Plymouth line. When the charges were originally fixed men were being paid 6s for a iO-hour day. Now the minimum wage was 13s 8d for an 8-hour day, and after 10 p.m. the men received rate and a quarter. “The position is that we cannot hfford to perform the service at a lower rate. We are not yet around the comer, and the present is not the time to review the charges.” The Railway Department was finding that it had been too “soft” for years past, and had performed services costing thousands of pounds for which it did not ask the public to pay one penny piece. The rate had been fixed as low as was consistent with the cost of the service, and he could give an assurance that the department was making nothing out of sorting charges to-day.
