The Australind sails from Montreal to wards the ond of this month, with cargo for the same ports. FERRY STEAMER MAORI. The smart "ferry" steamer Maori, which is at present being renovated in dry dock at Port Chalmers, has been dtsscribed as "a picture ship*' by a visitor to the docks. There is some cause for the description, although the phrasing of it is foreign to the language of the seafaring fraternity. Tho Maori's hull has been freshly painted in tho attractive green and gold of the Red Funnel passenger liners. The deck tints harmonise most pleasantly, and the shimmering white along the promenade -decks, impart a dainty sense of cleanliness, while the sparkling crimson of the twin funnels gives a striking touch of brilliance to the whole colour scheme. The Maori is scheduled to leave on October lGth for Wellington to re-enter the “ferry" service, and her newly-installed oil-fuel equipment should elminate oldtime stokehold difficulties, and increase the popularity of this crack triple-screw tnrbino steamier. The Wahino will withdraw at Lyttelton on October 18th to undergo annual survey and overhaul. She will resume in the Wellington-Lyttelton service early in December. HARBOUR EXTENSION AT OPUA. The matter of harbour extension at Opua, in the Bay .pf Islands, is now taking definite shape under the jurisdiction of the Bay of Islands Harbour Board. Berthage ha 6 been a long-stand-ing trouble, and the board recently let a oontraot for the extension of the wharf for a further 160 feet, and, for widening the existing structure fropy 37ft 6in to 48ft. This will allow Houle liners to berth, and take the frozen meat from the Moerewa freezing works. The work on the jvharf is nearing completion, and will 'be ready for next season. The structure)' when completed, will have a total length of over 500 feet. STATE STEAMSHIP LINE LOSSES. The annual report of the "Western Australian State steamship service, presented to Parliament recently, showed that the three vessels comprising the State fleet had inourfed a total loss, after providing for interest, depreciation, etc., of .£78,757 for the period. The running costs exceeded the earnings by J 116,431; to which excess the motor ship Kangaroo contributed only about JllOO. Despite the entry of another steamer into the hor’-west trade, the State vessels had more than held their own; bnt the coast was now over-supplied with shipping, and the issue, of a permit to another vessel had not been justified. NEW STEAMER SERVICE. Ah impoTthilt development of the steamer traffic oh the Waikato river is to be inaugurated this month. Mr F. O. BridgemAn, representing Messrs S. Holih and Co., of WAnganui, has been visiting Hamilton and other towns: on the Waikato river; and has. made,Arrangements to run the steamer Progress jh Port Waikato on October 16th, a 'cargo of general produce from ■ Lyttelton. The cargo will be distributed at the various points oh the, Waikato river, inoluding Thakau, Mentor, Hamilton, and Cambridge by tho Roose Shipping Company's river fleet. It is considered that if the new Service is properly supported, a saving of freights and overhead charges should be effected by Waikato merchants. Mr Bridgeman stated that if the business warranted it, a second steamer (tlie John) would be placed on the Lyttelfcon-Port Waikato Service. TRANSPACIFIC VESSELS. The Hauraki, from Pacific Coast ports, left San Francisco on September 29th for Auckland, Melbourne. Adelaide and Sydney She is due at Auckland atout October. 21st.
