LABOUR IN AMERICA

STAYS OUTSIDE POLITICS

FIXED PARTY WOULD DESTROY ITS EFFICIENCY.

FEDERATION’S DECISION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received October 10, 10.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 9. At Portland, the conservative element, lead by Mr Gompers, won another victory to-day, when the American Federation of Labour convention, by 25,000 votes to 1895, rejected a proposal to create a Labour Party to enter the political lists against the Republicans and Democrats. The convention approved l 'of a coun-ter-resolution declaring: “Experience has demonstrated that any attempt to mass and direct the potential power of Labour through any form of fixed party scheme is to destroy the efficiency coming from the flexible mobility of power to meet emergencies. The policy and practice of the American Federation to take sides en political principles, hut not in political parties, has been fully justified by experience.” Speakers during a long debate pro •phesied that British Labour’s influence would disappear when the Labour Party obtained control of the Government, ite greatest potentialities being as the Government’s opposition.
