CANTERBURY MARKETS '

NO INQUIRY FOR OATS. CHRISTCHURCH. July 27. The inactivity of the seed market has rarely been more noticeable than it has been during the past week.* In addition to it being more or leas an "off" period the weather has had some influt ence in the quietness. Cocksfoot is about the only line that can be excepted, and that only to a slight- extent. 1 ' A few sales hare been made on the basis of §id for standard seed. The market infirm at that figure. Cowgrass is- quiet, and this is due to the cut prices offered by sellers of foreign seed. Blenheim seed is on the market at IOJd per lb with no buyers. Values h t local seed may be quoted from 9)d to lOd to farmers.’ The slight improvement in the white clover market which was manifested last week hae not been -fnaintained. there being a very wide range of cover quotations. Some business for machinedressed has been done at 180 s per cwt., which is practically Is 7id per lb, 'but generally this is below what merchants are asking. Linseed is not as firm as it was a week or two ago. The market is quiet, and .£l6 5s per ton is the nominal quotation to farmers. PRODUCE MARKET. There are few peas held now in the growers’ hands, but some of the latter are shipping Home on consignment. The Home market has stood up to the heavy arrivals of the past few months and as the Angust-September demand generally is better than that in the earlier season they, are confident .of -a good, market. The latest reports were that the market was good in England. A big area is ‘'kely to be sown in peas here this year as there is an export outlet not possessed by wheat, oats or barley. POTATO TUG-OF-WAR. A real tug-of-war in the potato position is expected to develop in the course “ ~l n Aa S a « the shipments as far as Lyttelton and Tunarn are concerned are not heavy. The Kurow took 3500 sacks, but 500 of these were seed, and a heavy proportion of tables were the completion of the forward contracts. The Katoa lifted 1200 sack from Timaru The next vessel, the V igatqi, is not in Auckland until August Bth or 9th. In the meantime farmers are not offering, and few tubers are being bought under A 8 5s to AS 10s per ton on trucks. Quite a number of them have stated that when they can per ton they will open up their
