NOTES ON THE RACING

TRENTHAM HORSES DO WELL. The Trentham cross-country horseman, , H. McSweeney, had a good innings this afternoon, winning the Wanganui 3 Steeplechase on Tigerland, the Hack Hurdles on Militaire, and running second in the Century Hurdles on En Route. , The biggest dividend of the day wde : returned by Pouma, which exceeded a . score. A good punt;was done on Sunny Vale, but the Hawera gelding was beaten again; i his ’ being second, however, saved the money invested. Sunny Vale finished well, but had no chance with Veil. Alabama ran well with his big weight on the soft track. Tinohori ran three furlongs in 37seo on the morning of the races, which was 1 considered a smart gallop. She was well 2 backed for the Purua Handicap, and 3 showed a lot of pace, but after striding to Veil for five furlongs was beaten into third place. Watch Tinohori. > Tho change of quarters from R, J. , Mason’s to Walter Raynor’s seems to have greatly benefited Veil. The full sister to Rational and The Monk )vas a : failure when trained at Ricearton, but she won very nicely in the first race of j tho Wanganui meeting. She was not finishing over generously, but she showed ! That she could begin well and muster up ’ a lot of pace. j Tigerland looked very well when he stripped for the Wanganui Steeples, but the general opinion is that he was a bit on the big side, and many were afraid . he might want a race. He won comfortably enough in a sense, but Whipcord was staying on quite as well as fie L was. Whipcord, of course, is the more seasoned, and Tigerland will show the I greater improvement as the season advances , Tinokaha ran about a lot at his fences in the Century Hurdles, and had he not been well clear of the field he might have brought something down. With a bit of luck En Route might have won the Century Hurdles. He was last for a considerable portion of the journey, but in the run from the six furlong post to the four furlong post he cut down the field at a terrific pace. He was with Tinokaha two hurdles from home, but tho long run down the back stretch had taken a lot out of him and Tinokalia prevailed in the final run. Quest was a trifle unlucky in the Connolly Handicap. He was well up all the way till nearing the entrance to the straight, whon he went back a little. Boy Reed took the chance of getting up on the rails in the straight, but just when Quest seemed to have a chance of being in the finish he was blocked. He was running on nicely in third place when the post was reached. Boomerday got a bad run in some stages of the Connolly Handicap, but finished well. Several horses were almost in line at the last jump in the Hack Hurdles, but in the run to the judge Militaire left •the opposition standing. His pace on the flat won the race for him. Pouma was up alongside Golden Bubble' most of the way in the Borough Handicap, but is only «. pony, and the big chestnut almost completely obscured her. When the pair hit the straight it was a toss up which would win, but Pouma, with a featherweight aboard, stayed on best in the soft going and got the verdict. Pouma is a five-year-old mare by Campfire from Martingale, and traceß back to the Spray family. She is trained at Stratford by J. F. Butler for Mr A. W Budge, a well-known Taranaki sportsman. Rouen won tho Connolly Handicap in »ather striking stylo, and appears to ho lust about back to his best form. The soft going enabled him to hit out well, and he came right away in the straight I when the real pressure was on. Since 1915 tho winners of tblrCentury Hurdles have been; Styrnx, Master Kegel, Sir Fisher (twice in eucccesion), fcuripos, Lochella, Ngata, Poanui. and I inokaha. .Tho winners of the Connolly Handicap since 1915 have been ■—Lnriy Louisa. Mullingar, Gang Awn’. Volo, Marqueteur ttwicp in succession), Malaga, Printemps, and Rouen. 1 The last dozen winners of the Wanganui Steeplechase nre Okaihau, Glenmore. Jackman. Daylight Bill. Bracbnrn, Dlucpot, Bracbum. Coalition, First Line, toeman, Khartoum, and Tigerland.
