MINISTERIAL The Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister for Lands and Railways),- who attended the opening of the Bruce Park at Hunterville yesterday, .returns to Wellington'by the Main Trunk express today. The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Health and Education), and the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister for Mines, Marine, and Labour), are due back in Wellington from - the South Island this morning. ■ ■ Sir George Clifford has returned to Christchurch from Wellington. . Mr G. T. 'Webster, -Portland, Oregon, is visiting Christchurch. Mr G. D. Greenwood, who came to Wellington for the raoes, has returned to Christchurch. Mr W. O’Donnell,' late borough engineer at Greymouth, lias taken up his residence in Waipukurau. The Rev. W. Gray Dixon, who was for several months at Lyttelton, is now doing relieving work at Westport. Mr W. T. Goodwin, assistant director of the Horticultural Division, is at present on au official visit to Dunedin. The New Zealand tennis team, which has been competing in the Australian championships, returned to Wellington by the Maranja yesterday. The City Engineer (Mr W. H. Morton) has .been advised: by ■’his doctor to take a rest from his duties, and he has accordingly entered the Bowen street private hospital. Mr R. W. McVilly, General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, who is making an inspection of Louth Island lines, was at Ashburton yesterday. He has visited Blenheim and, North Canterbury. The Rev. A. Harding, who will leave Pahiatua this week, intends taking up’ his residence at the Lower Hurt. Rev. 0.. A. Foeton, of Rangiora, who succeeds Rev. Harding, will reach Pahiatua towards the end of this week. To-day the Governor-General (.Vis count Jellicoe) will officially open the Maheno and Marama Hall at the Otago University. This hall was erected to'WsSrng poses of a gymnasium. At the quarterly meeting of the Ohoka Methodist' circuit, the Rev. Mr Roberts took farewell of the members. Mr J. White, Swannanoa,. on behalf of the circuit, presented Mr Roberts with a travelling case, and Mrs Roberts with a hand bag. Royal, Palmeriston North. j The death of Mr Eugene Anton Schwarz, following a brief illness, has removed a much respected resident from Palmerston North. The deceased, who was born in Liverpool, England, in 1868, came‘to the'Dominion in 1834 . : and settled in the Manawatn; to do : some pioneering in tbe surrounding dis-; tricts. In 1890 he married and settled down in Palmerston North. ' A presentation of travelling rugs was made by the Auckland branch of the Merchant Service Guild to Captains Hardy and jßenaut, surveyors of ships at Auckland, who are being transferred to Dunedin and Lyttelton reeoectively. In making the presentation. Captain E. Dorling, the president of the guild, spoke in eulogistic terms rf the way Captains Hardy end Renaut i had carried out, their work at Auckland, and wished them every success in connection with their new appointments. A unique experience is presented in the coming of the Rev. H. E. Bellhouse to Trinity Church (says the “Otago Daily Times”). The reverend gentleman supplied the Trinity pulpft for twelve months during the absence of the Rev. I. I. Lewis in. England. This was 26 years ago. He now > returns, having been appointed, by . the conference as superintendent of Trinity circuit, whilst his son, Mr G. T. Bellhouse, a student at Knox College, has filled the temporary, position at First Church during the absence of the Rev. G. H. Balfour. Thus father and eon will be preaching on Sunday in two of the leading churches of the city.
Mr W. I. Bolam, Christchurch manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd., will retire under the company’s superannuation scheme on May 31st. Mr Bolam arrived in the Dominion from England in September, 1883, for the purpose of engaging, in farming, but not finding the prospects encouraging, entered the company's service at the head office, Auckland, in February, 1884. Subsequently he became chief clerk at Napier, chief clerk, acting and assistant manager at Wellington, and in December, 1896, was appointed manager for Tasmania, with headquarters at Launceston. Three years later be became ’manager for Otago, and for. the last eight years has been manager for Canterbury and the West Coast. Although free, Mr Bolam. does not intend to retire from active' business habits at present, but will interest himself in the trustee and execu tor department of the_ company, for whioh he has been retained, with the title of trust officer and location in the company’s Christchurch office.
Air P. J. O’Regan,' of Wellington, is at Auckland. Dr P. H. Buck has gone to Auckland from Gisborne. Rotarian Clabburn is leaving for » visit to England early next week. Air H. W: Nixon, formerly editor of Hie Thames “Star,” is visiting Wellington. Air J. O’Grady, of the literary '■tail of Hie Waikato “Times,” is in Wellington. Major F. H. Lampen, D. 5.0., has retired from the Defence Department to go into business in Dunedin. Air Ashley E. Clayton, general manager of the Prudential Assurance Co., Ltd., is at present on a visit to Dunedin. Air and Mrs Phil Nathan, who have been in the South Island for a few months, have returned to Wellington, and are staying at the Albert Hotel. Mr Frank H. Taylor, manager of the New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, is makiDg a brief business visit to Sidney during this month. Among the guests at the Rotary Club lunch yesterday was Mr P. _E. Petrie, of Samoa, who has bqen acting as liquidator of German estates in Samoa. Mr Evan Parry, late engineer-in-chief to the New Zealand Government, who is representing Hie English Electrio Company at the opening of Arthur’s Pass tunnel, was a guest at Hie Rotary Club’s luncheon yesterday.. Air H. E. Combs, secretary of the P» and T- Association, arrived back in Wellington yesterday morning, after three weeks’ absence in the South Island doing organisation work for the association. Mr R. W. Kane, financial adviser to the Publiq Trust Office, has been granted leave 4 of absence for six weeks. During his absence his duties »t the Public Trust Office will be carried out by Mr Alfred Smith, formerly branch manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington:
