TURNBULL CUP RACE. AN EASY WIN FOR MAKANGI. Ideal yachting conditions prevailed on Saturday, when the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club held the annual race for the Turnbull Cup, and the Te Ruru Cup for 6econd-class yachts. TURNBULL CUP. There were seven entries in the Turnbull Cup race, Marangi (scr), Rona (4min), Kotere (SJmin), Kotere 11. (Bmin), Atlanta (ltmin), Ailsa (14min), Wanderer tl4min). All the boats got away together in a bunch, but Marangi was sailing splendidly, worked ahead, and led throughout, with a considerable distance separating the second boat. The course was from Clyde quay wharf to Koro Koro buoy, thence round the Pinnacle buoy and home. On the run home Marangi' presented a fine spectacle, with Kotere following, and Rona some distance behind. The corrected finishing times were:— Marangi (B. Clarke), shr 48min 25sec 1 Kotere (J. Cull), 6hr 3min 2 Rona (J. McLean), 6hr 55min 3 TE RURU CUP. There were five entries in fhis event, but only four started, the vessels being Galatea (scr), Windward (lOmin), Rawene (14min), Seabird (14min)‘. The course was the same as that for the Turnbull Cup. From the start Galatea took the lead, and was the first round the Koro Koro buoy, with Windward, Seabird and Rawene close behind. On the beat to Pinnacle buoy,’Windward, which was sailing excellently, rapidly overhauled Galatea, and passed the buoy about seven minutes ahead. Galatea was next, with RaWfene about eight minutes behind. Seabird withdrew, and the places then remained unchanged on the run home, and they crossed the finishing line in that order. The corrected finishing times were : Windward (G. Nicholson), Ghr 22min 20sec 1 Rawene (N. Blair), 6hr 36min 25sec 2 Galatea (D. Tringham), 6hr 39min lCsec 3 18 FOOT YACHTS AND UNDER. There were eight starters in this event, and they got away promptly—lllanois (scr), Cooee (scr), Eynan (scr). Geisha (2Jmin), Boomerang (4min), Mahou (9min), Kewpie (13min), Tiri (19min). The course was from the starting line to the Coromandel buoy and back to a buoy off the boat harbour, twice round. All got away well bunched together, until the first buoy when Illanois took the lead, with Cooee, Eynan, Geisha, Mahou, Boomerang, and Kewpie, in that order. At the end of the first round Cooee took the lend, with Illanois second. On the second round Illanois forged ahead, with Cooee close behind, but 6he appeared to foul the buoy, and Eynan came np and passed her. It was a close finish betweeit Eynan, Illanois and Geisha, for the latter then came up well in the last lap. and gradually overhauled the field and
won on time. The corrected finishing times were:— Geisha (J. Turner and W. Nijnmo), 4hr 45min 58sec 3 Illanois (P. Hamlin), 4hr 46mm lteec ... 2 Eynan (C. Ross), 4hr 46min 3Csec 3 Cooee was disqualified. Mr R. Millman was judge and starter. At the conclusion of the day a dance was held at the clubhouse, when the yachtsmen entertained their friends. SATURDAY’S RACE EVANS BAY YACHT AND MOTORBOAT CLUB. There were only two starters in the above club’s centre-board yacht race on Saturday, when a fresh southerly breeze was blowing in the bay. The race resulted as follows, handicap and corrected finishing time being given:— Petrel (20min), 4hr S3min 50sec 1 Miro (16min), 4hr 36min S6sec 2 Other boats which were entered were : Cooee (scr), Sylvia (smin), Kingfisher (lOmin), and Thelma (25min). ANNUAL PICNIC EVANS BAY YACHT AND MOTORBOAT CLUB. Ideal weather conditions avoured the Evans Bay Yacht ami Motor-boat Clubs annual picnic, held at Worser Bay yesterday, when about 300 were present. Club members and guests were conveyed to the picnic ground by yachts and motor boats, the ladies fully appreciating the calm weather conditions during t..e trip across. A programme of 6porta events was gone through, and the various games were entered into with spirit by old and young alike. An energetic committee of club members kept things moving merrily, and everyone appeared to be having a most enjoyable outing. A copper of water was kept boinling for the convenience of those wishing to make tea. The breeze fell away towards evening, but all the boats arrived back home safely, one or two of the yachts being towed in by launches. Following ade the names of prize winners in the principal sports events: — Ladies’ apple race, Mrs Johnson 1, Miss Cheesman 2; ladies’ rela yrace. Miss Wilcox 2, Miss Cheesman 2; three-legged race (ludy and gent), Miss Cheesman and Mr Smith 1; mn’s apple race. C.
