LIFE-SAVING
BELTMAN’S CONTEST. The beltman’a championship under the auspices of the Wellington centre of the Life Saving Association took place at Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon. Only two teams competed, Lyall Bay and Island Bay, and Lyall Bay won by Msec on time. The results were:—lsland Bay, D. Murrell -m i n 20sec: Wmstanley, 2rain 1 l-ssec; C. Claridge, -min l€spc; Mollier2min 18 l-ssec; average, 2min 13Jsec. Island Bay, R. Beveridge, 3min 16 l-ssec; A. Laurie. 3min l.isec; J. Burke. 2min 52 2-ssec; G. Spriggms, 2min 48seci average, 3ruin 3*sec. Mr R. Binns was starter and judge, and Messrs Dicker and P. Coira were the timekeepers. Care requires to be used even when using a surf board as is instanced by one or two accidents which have occurred at Lvall Bay recently. A lady bather who tripped and fell on to the edge of her board injured one leg so severely that she had to lay up for two or three days, while a gentleman had the misfortune to fall on the end of his, breaking one rib and injuring two other*. Several more men have been examined in life saving over the end of the week, and all candidates succeeded in passing. This is necessary to enable them to taka part, in the various contests for -.he trophies of the Life Saving Society. The silver reel competition takes place 4 Lyall Bay on Saturday next.
