A LARGE CALENDAR
, CRIMINAL SESSIONS OPENED BY MR JUSTICE CHAPMAN. MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE THROWN OUT. The criminal sessions of the Supieme Court were opened yesterday by His Honour Mr Justice Chapman, who commented upon the large calendar for consideration on this occasion, in the course of his address (reported elsewhere) to the grand jury. Mr A. D. Kennedy was elected foreman of the following, who comprised the grand jury:—Messrs D. A. Taylor, L. D. Hurst, Charles Sims, George Sidford, Horace Wheatley, L. Jones, A. D. Kennedy, G. A. Stone, Frank Dyer, Lionel Nelson, A. Bqdke, Edward Oakes, Robert Strothers, Matthew Kennedy, G. D. Talbot, Thomas Davies, D. Beaglehole, Felix Savage, Arthur Johns, R. E. Taylor, H. W. Short.
The grand jury returned at 12.15 p.m. with true hills against George Robert Kemp, alleged false pretences, and Arthur Edward Dodd, alleged receiving of stolen goods. The grand jurymen did not complete their task yesterday afternoon, and have still a number of cases to deal with. No hill was returned in connection with the charge of alleged manslaughter against Edith Mary Armstrong, a mental hospital attendant. True bills were later returned in connection with the charges against J. G. Bruce (alleged theft), F. A. Stempa (alleged theft), W. S. MaK. Reid (alleged attempted rape), W. Standon (alleged carnal knowledge), and Francis M. O’Kesfe and Timothy O’Keefe (alleged incest).
