WELLINGTON LADDER —— * I FRANCE BEATS PEACOCK. At tko Thorndon Club courts on Saturday L. France gained his fourth successive victory in Wellington ladder matches when ho defeated G. C Peacock, 3—6, 7—5, 7—5, and now ranks as first player in Wellington. Following upon his conclusive defeats of J. Parker, E. Salmond, It. N. K. Swanston and his win over J. C. Peacock in five sets at Hastings, this makes France almost a certainty for the New Zealand team for Australia. The Thorndon player took the first sot and led 5 —4 and 40 —15 in the second; but netted three times in succession and lost to the younger man's constant attack. BROUGHAM HILL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. A start has been made in ydaying off the opening rounds of the Brougham Jli.ll Club's tournament. In the men's singles the following games have takqn place:— H. V. Howe beat J. Paul. 6—3, 6 —4. W. Ralph beat W. Harbison, 6 —3, 6—3. L. France beat K. Port, 6—o, 6^-2. The following players are leading for the Law's trophy:— Mrs Hooper, Messrs H. Dudson, S. Roberts, Misses M. Williams, Wild, Messrs C. Tucker, G. S. Maloney, L. Fisher, Miss Stevens, Mrs Treadgdld, Norris, Mr IC. Port. PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMENCING THIS WEEK. THE PROBABLE TEAMS. It is understood that three intro-pro-vinoial matches will be held between a representative Wellington tennis team, and teams from adjoining districts. On Saturday next (February 10th) Wellington will meet Wanganui at Wellington. On February 16th, a Wellington team will journey to Christchurch to meet the Cathedral City's best, and on Thursday, I,2nd, a Taranaki team is to meet Wellington at Thorndon courts. The personnel of- the teams is at present uncertain. The team to go to Christchurch will consist of six men and six women; but it is said that Wanganui propose to send down only six men. Whether the Taranaki team will consist of Iboth sexes we are not informed; but in all probability twelve players will make the journey. The men ,who will compose the team will, of course, he drawn from those available, but for the home matches J. C. Peacock, L. France, R. N. K. Swanston, J. Parker and FX Salmond, with possibly E. D. Andrews, of Palmerston North, as the fourth man, should be able to play. N. B. Barkman should be next on the list. When the Wellington ladder was .formed it was understood that it waa not to be adhered to when the selection of a representative team was made. This being so, it will be intereeting to see where the selectors place P. White-Parsons, who is not on the ladder, but is considered to have a 1 claim to fifth position, also whether they select J. Power, who has not earned, his ranking at eighth man. W. Hollings, for instance, has a greater claim. Cuff, who represented Wellington last year, is no longer in the district, and is consequently not eligible. The ladies team should be Miss Howe, Mrs Melody, Misses Travers and Tracy, Mrs Peacock and Miss Arrowsmith, who are undobtedly the best available, as well as the top six on the ladder. Whether the selection committee will rank the players or invito them to play matches in doubtful cases is uncertain. Particularly interesting is the case of Miss Howe, who has beaten Mrs Melody twice recently, each time under bad conditions, but who is ranked as fourth lady, below Miss Tracy. The difference between the junior champion and Mrs Melody is to little that it is uncertain whether any committee would be justified in ranking l her as first lady, even after her performances against the Australian team. TARANAKI CHAMPIONBHIPS THE WINNERS. PUB T'IIESH AHSOCTA.TIOUNBW PLYMOUTH, February 4. The Taranaki lawn tennis tournament concluded on Saturday.
