R.S. WAR MEMORIAL—WELLINGTON.
(To tie Editor "N.Z. Times.") Sir, —I would draw your attention to the arrangements so far made public and which, at this stage might hare your advice or comment. An Auckland architect has been appointed assessor—he also acts, for Havelock North add Southland. Do you think this a wise arrangement? Com petiiors for • Havelock North and South land who havo not been successful arc consequently prejudged by the assessor and can have no nope of success in Wellington competition. Does it follow that the taste displayed at, say. Southland, is the best for what is to be a Wellington public monument? Wouldi you publish an illustration of the Southland selection by assessor. Tastes fortunately differ. Many hold that the. cenotaph cult is badly over, done throughout New Zealand, as witnessed by some of the unhappy and lachrymose erections in different towns. Arc the great victory over Germanism and the memory of our glorious dead fittingly commemorated by funereal and grief perpetuating erections? Some feel we have nad our fill of the "agony business." Mieht I suggest that your voice bo raised for a brighter representation in Wellington, and that the Auckland assessor might let some other body have the final word. . VICTOR!.
