Olyntlius is one of those who rarely trouble the judge, and when he won the hurdles at Woodville yesterday he paid a fair price, considering that the field was small in numbers and weak in quality. Hallowroz and Mountain March, who won the double at Woodville yesk terday, registered a similar performance at Pahiatua a few weeks ago. Te Kuri and Kilroe, who were trained at Trentham for some time by A. Goodman, are now located at Gisborne, where their owner resides. Acceptances for Gisborne, Egmout and Wanganui close to-morrow. Songbird contracted a cold while at Trentham, and to this is now attributed his poor showing on the last day of the meeting. Though Glentruin has been withdrawn. from the Dunedin Cup, she will probably be sent to Wingatui to contest other events. She is a likely starter in the Hazk-it Memorial Stakes, which is set down to be decided on the last day of the meeting. This should be one of the best , races of the meeting as the field includes Oupidon, Winning Hit, Pluto, Palestrina, Silver Peak, Gold Light and Many Kittle. It is understood that tho Wellington Trotting Club made a profit from its fixture held last month, but the credit balance was not as large as that from the previous meeting, owing to the greater expense which was incurred on the recent occasion. Rational is going well in his work in Hawera, and it is expected that he will he a starter in the Stakes. The defection of Kick Off from the Duntedin Onp field 'could not have Been altogether unexpected, for tho All Black gelding does not appear to have as strong opposition to meet at Egmont as he-would encounter in the. south. Some idea of • how the Government taxes press on clubs may he, gathered from the fact that the State took from the Wellington Trotting Club over its recent meeting just about the same amount as the dub paid* out in. stakes —roughly £I7OO. Since her return from Trentham, Scrimmage has been galloping well on the Raocarton tracks, and it probably will be found that the racing she had here will improve her. Razzle Dazzle finished several lengths in front of Murihaupo in a gallop over a sprint course at Riccarton the other morning. On the same morning Red Gown finished up a six furlong gallop better than Many Kittle, who accompanied her. One of the ..fastest pieces of work was done by Matrtis. Eightoonpence and Polyminin, who reeled off five furlongs in 1.3. Limelight went well la her work, but the effort was not timed. Contempt easily heat Tiff, and the time was 1.17 2-stha for six furlongs. Sir George Clifford has sold the three-year-old gelding Wharfedale, by - Antagonist—Bonnie Brae, to a West Coast sportsman. The South Canterbury horseman, F. ID. Jones, was very muoh in evidence at the Winton Trotting dub’s meeting lon Saturday, when he piloted three winners in succession,. Jones is a capable reinsman, biyt it is in the saddle that he is seen to speoial advantage. “Onp” events loom up largely for decision during February. The Gisborne Cup is fixed to be decided on February Bth, and there are; also the

Egmont Oup (February 7thL Dunedin Oup (February ' Bth), :Te Kuiti Cup (February 10th), Taumarunui Cup (February 12th), Thames .Goldfields Oup (February 17th), Otahuhu Trotting Cup ' (February' 17th), and Wanganui ‘Gup (February 22na). * Tarleton, who was successful at Takapuna, was bred by Mr G. L. Stead, being a brother to Royal Box, by Nassau, from the Australian mare Brayton, by Bardolph from Zaza, by Tho Admiral from The Channer. He won a couple ot races for Mr Stead in the spring, and from present appearances he is- likely to be very, successful, though not perhaps quite in the front rank. Thre© of the winners at the Winton Trotting dub’s meeting on Saturday were sired by Logan Pointer, who is again having a very successful season, as he is at present in first place in the winning sires’ list. The City of Evansville, which arrived .at Auckland last week from New York, brought over three wallbred trotting horses, says a northern writer. All three are far the South Inland. They were taken by ferry boat to the quarantine station at Motuihi, where they will remain for 28 days. The names and sex are as follow : —(1) Noiseless. She is a threc-year-old black filly, standing about 14.3, and shows plenty of quality. 12) Di.rcct Todd, a bay gelding, three jiokrs old, and stands about’ 15.2. Ho is of rather a plain type, and appears to: have fared tho worst of tho three on- the journey. (3) Brigand, a dark brown two-year-old colt, standing about 16.1. He shows an enormous quantity of power and plenty of quality. The three are still wearing their winter coats.
