A BURGLAR’S CONSCIENCE
DIAMOND RING AND BROOCH. FOUND IN LETTER BOX. Another of those idccahional Jinatances of the conscience of a thief resulting in the return of stolen property to the owner, has occurred rt Devonport, Auckland, says the Auckland “Star.” Just about a year ago the residence of Mr George Totman at Oaliiope road was entered one night and in addition to some cash, a diamond ring and brooch were stolen. In the intervening months nothing was heard of the missing jewellery. The other night the family went to bed at 10 p.m., and upon going to the letter box in the morning Mr Totman was surprised to find a small parcel in it, which, upon being opened, contained the missing diamond ling and brooch. Evidently the conscience of the thief caused him to return the stolen property, because it is hardly likely that had he wished to dispose of the ring and the brooch, an opportunity could not have been found during the year since the residence was entered.
