LORRY’S PERILOUS DASH
OUT OF CONTROL AT 40 MILES AN HOCJR. DOWN HILL. A motor-lorry and trailer laden with wood blocks coming down Reigate Hill got out of control, ani there was consternation among motorists ascending the hill as they saw the lorry rush down. The driver, C. J. Ferriri, attempted to hug the near side of the road. The lorry mounted the footpath, ran for some distance within a foot of a precipice 150 ft deep, swerved back to the road, knocked down an electric light standard, and when travelling at about 40 miles an hour, dashed into a bank. The force of the impact was so great that the lorry turned round, and the trailer dragged it another 50 yards. When it seemed inevitable that the lorry would collide with a motor-car, Ferriri told his mate to jump and save himself. He did so, the driver sticking to the wheel, and his pluck and coolness probably saved loss of life.
