A TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR
IN SOUTHERN SUBURBS. AN UNEXPECTED DELUGE. With almost dramatic suddenness at about midday one of the most severe thunderstorms of recent years was experienced by several of the southern Wellington suburbs yesterday. The rain fell for about twenty minutes in a manner reminiscent of a tropical downpour, and by the time the storm was over the gutterways were brimming over with water, and quite incapable of carrying their unexpected burden. Several exceedingly heavy claps of thunder were also experienced The storm passed away almost as suddenly as it arrived, and later in the afternoon was succeeded by bright warm sunshine. Some damage was done to gardens at Hataitai, as was also the case at Kilbirn'ie and Lyall Bay, -while out in the bay a long patch of clay-coloured water told its own story.
The storm was not experienced in the oity, only a few drops of rain falling, although the claps of thunder were plainly heard. No damago of a serious nature has been reported.
