MAILS BY MAKURA

NO ENGLISH OR CONTINENTAL. No English or Continental mails were brought to New Zealand by the Makura, which arrived at Auckland from Vancouver. She brought only Canadian and American mails. This was no doubt due to the fact that the seamen’s strike delayed the Makura at Sydney at the end of November, when mails to connect with her at Vancouver would be leaving London. As it was not certain when the Makura would leave Sydney, mails from London for New Zealand were forwarded by another route. The large English mail brought from Sydney to Auckland by the intercolonial steamer Marama, on January 9th, was probably the mail which should have come to Auckland via Vancouver.
