In the Ku Klux Klan trials at Bastrop, Robert Dade, Mayor pf Merrouge, admitted being a former member of the Klan, and one of the hooded party which seized Daniel and two others a few days before Daniel was tortured to death. After threatening to lash them, they ■finally released the prisoners. Dade named M’Cain aftd Skipwith as being in the band. The Mayor also declared that the Klan completely ruled Merrouge, overriding the civil officials. A RUTHLESS CODE ENFORCED BY WHIPPINGS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received January 14, 10.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 13. A Merrouge message states that witness after witness, including members of the Klan, is terrified. The Klan controlled the parish, and ruthlessly enforced codes of its own. Protests from outraged citizens were adequately dealt with by the head of the parish. The Klan openly boasted that anyone who was unable to keep his mouth shut would be whipped within an.inch of his life.

A WOMAN WHIPPED

At Goosecreek in Texas, masked men seized and whipped a young woman, and a male caller at her home. The woman has fled to Houston for protection. A mass meeting called to proteat against the occurrence was broken up b.v individuals, who allowed none to speak.
