MOTOR-CAR ABLAZE
AN EXCITING INCIDENT. LADIES’ NARROW ESCAPE. An exciting incident occurred at Onepu road, Lyall Bay, at 2.45 yesterday afternoon, when a motor-car, which was being driven from Kilbirnie towards the bay, suddenly burst into flames, and in five minutes the body of the car was a complete wreck. It was being driven by Mr H. S. Stevens, of Kilbirnie, who was accompanied by his wife, two lady friends, and a little boy. The car was proceeding at a moderate pace when pedestrians noticed flhmes under the car, and called out to the driver. He immediately pulled up, and as he did bo the front of the car burst into flames. Fortunately, all the occupants were able to get out before they received any injury, but by the time a supply of water was available the body and upholstery of the car was completely destroyed. The tyres were undamaged. A few pails of water extinguished the flames, and the framework was run into the yard of Mr Erickson, at the corner of Apu crescent. The damage is covered by insurance. A large crowd was attracted to the spot by the incident.
