RACE RIOTS
CLASH IN FLORIDA TWENTY NEGROES AND TWO WHITES KILLED. AN UGLY OUTLOOK. By TeJegTari—Press Asm.—GonrrlfM. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 6, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 5. Al Rosewood, Florida, twenty negroes and two whites were killed and many wounded in night race riots following the lynching of a negro 'concerned in an attack on a white girl. A score of blacks to-day barricaded themselves in a house, which was surrounded by a mob of armed. whites, who are awaiting reinforcements before attacking the negroes, who are heavily armed. Bands of negroes throughout the district are also arming, fearing a bloody .clash. The State troops are held in readi. ness for instant action. NEGROES SURRENDER A FRUITLESS SEARTH. (Received January 7, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 6. At Rosewood. Florida, the barricaded negroes surrendered and permitted a search for a negro guilty of the attack on a white girL As they did not find him in the house the armed whites withdrew.
