BURIED CITY DISCOVERED
Italy’s leading archaelegiats axe gathering at Sorrento, near Naples, sent thither by news of a discovery which promises to ■rfrow much light on early Italo-Qreek history.
As the result of casual digging by i some youths, what is believed to bo < the old Greek town of Sisson has been discovered near Sorrento. Siretm was believed to have been the ssnctoaiy of the Sirens, the eea nymphs who lured mariners to destruction by their singing. and as such is mentioned by Virgil f Aeneid, Book 5, verse 861), Btrsbo, the Roman geographer who lived at the same time, Homor, and Hesodins. a contemporary of Homer. So far one of the city gates has been unearthed. They are of enormous blocks of tufa (volcanic stone), carefully smoothed qnd fitted. A party wall has also been exposed.
