There was a mors or lees persistent rumotir afloat during the holidays that the Baden Powell, which left Gisborne for Napier on December 23rd, had met with a mishap and failed to reach her destination. It was unfounded, although the vessel certainly had a rough pas sage. The Arahura, which left for Auckland the same day, also experienced a rough voyage, and although' she cleared from the hay at 4 o’clock in the af’ernoon, she did not reach 'Auckland until, after 10 o’clock the following day, the-trip thus having occupied thirty hours. . Though the Paraparaumu Athletic Association had a large attendance at then meeting on Monday and took about £6O at the gate, there was a relatively poof attendance’ from the area north or Paraparaumu, owing to the 7.10 train from Palmerston North not being run. An earlier train leaving Palmezston at 6.35 a.m. was run, but this was - apparently too early to suit the sports meeting, as it arrived at Paraparaumu at about 9 a.m., an hour arid a half before the meeting commenced, whereas the usual train would have arrived at about 10.30 a.m., or just in tim > for the commencement of the sports. of the staff of the National Mortgage and Agency Company at Dunedin gathered to express their friendship and goodwill to Mr D. M. Malloch, who is severing his connection with - the firm. Mr J. Bews, the manager, spoke in high appreciation of Mr Malloch's services to the company during his five years* association with it, and in conveying the good wishes of hie fellow-employees. for his future, presented him with an inscribed gold watch. Mr Malloch is leaving the firm intending shortly to set up in business for himself in Dunedin. The members of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union have decided to pay quarterly contributions amounting to 10s -per member, and to take np a "bucket collection" to defray funeral expenses of three deceased members.
