THE HONOURS LIST

NEW ZEALAND RECIPIENTS. The New Zealand Honours List of this New Year (says the Auckland “Star” in an editorial) is notable for one or two bestowals —and one or two omissions. The Reform Government, in respect to conferment of honours, is kind to its supporters. There is a New Zealander on the other side of politics wjio has given better service to the public than any man in the present net, but he is passed over year after year. We have no liking for honours as a method of recognition, but so long as the system exists it should be operated with a reasonable degree of impartiality. Mr Harold Beauchamp's knighthood is earned -by years of service on the directorate of the largest commercial concern in the Dominion, to say nothing of his other activities. Mr George Elliot, who succeeded Mr Beauchamp as chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, has also, in bis capacity of President of the International Exhibition held in Auckland, and in various other prominent positions in connection with our commercial institutions, rendered good service to the community. Mr Edward Newman 1 owes his O.M.G. to inis work in raising money for British seamen' during the war; but he has a higher olaim in having 'been a hard-working and capable member of Parliament for fourteen years. The conferment of an 0.8. E. on the headmaster of one of the primary schools in the city of Wellington is a welcome compliment to our fine body of public school teachers. We trust that the precedent set in this ease and in that of J»xr- Firth, the late headmaeter of Wellington College, will be extended, and it is in no parochial spirit that we add the hope that these honours will not be confined to Wellington. The names of two Auckland educationists who have recently retired from service will occur to many of our readers as being. especially deserving of such recognition.
