GATHERING AT TIMARU. WELLINGTON GIRL’S SUCCESS. Per Press Association. TTMARiU, January 1. The first day of tho South Canterbury Caledonian sports was held at Timaru in favourable, though dull weather, before a very large attendance. The entries for running and cycling reached record* in several events. Trembath won the quarter in 51 3-5 sec, running round a huge field, also the 220yds fairly comfortably, and found third place in the Citizens' Handicap of 120yds, the .£SO for whioh fell to D. Cameron, a sixteen yea re-old Chertsey boy. In tho cycling events O'Shea won the scratch mile; F. Hoffman, of Gore, the half mile; D. Wright, of Reefton, the ,£3O wheel race of a mile and a half; and A. Boarmon, of Christchurch, the mile handicap. In the sword dance (New Zealand championship for girls under 14), R. Robinson, of Dunedin, was first. Babe Coy, of Wellington, won the New Zealand girls’ championship for the sheauntriubhas. This competitor also accounted for the South Canterbury championship for girls under 18.

SECOND DAY.

TIMARU, January 2. The second day of the Caledonian Society’s sports attracted another large attendance and excellent sport was seen. The cycling was especially keen. O’Shea won the two mile scratch race. Hill (Christchurch) 'he half-mile, Hoffman (Gore) the mile and a half, and Birch (Christchurch) the n ile. In the last race, O'Shea, from scratch, put up a record for the track, the time being 2min 3 l-sseo. The hundred yards sprint resulted in a dead heat between Harris (Dunedin) and David 1 Point), and the 220 yar ls went to David;, Trembath being third from scratch. The half-mile was won by Miller (Motukaraara) and the mile went to Mathieean 'Southland) from scratch. Diping, jigs, and hornpipes (New Zealand championship) J. A Cameron (Mataura). Dancing . (reel) Dominion championship.—Bans Coy (Wellington) who also won the Highland Fling championship.
