Writing in the “Weekly Despatch,” Madame Melba says: “If anybody tells me Kitchener had no heart I have, an answer ready.” Giving an authorised version of an incident at Government House, Melbourne, when Lord Kitchener attended the Goveriior-Genenal’s dinner, she states that the GovernorGeneral, the State Governor, and Lord Kitchener pretended to kneel before her. When she said she wfuld not sing, Lord Kitchener , replied': ‘Madame, I have been an exile for eight years. Sing just a verse of ‘Home, Sweet Home.’ ” She complied, and Lord Kitchener, with tears rolling down his cheeks, kissed her hand.
