OBITUARY
MR EDWARD SAUNDERS.
There died in Wellington yesterday Mr Edward Saunders, one of the best known and most capable journalists in New Zealand. Mr Saunders was taken ill with pneumonia a little over a week ago, and passed away at his home in Kilbirnie at about 1 o’clock yesterday morning. Mr Saunders commenced his career as a journalist on the “Lyttelton Times," and on the retirement of his father, Mr S. Saunders, from the editorship of that paper, he came fo Wellington. For some time he was a member of the staff of the “New Zealand Times.” In 1916 he enlisted, hut in camp he met with an injury which necessitated his discharge. He then joined the “Dominion,” and remained with it as its Parliamentary representative to the time of his death. -He had an exceptional knowledge of New Zealand politics, and was widely, liked ' anil respected. He was the leading authority! in this part of the' world on Shaokelton. He wrote both Shackelton’s books, and was a very close friend of th 9 great explorer. Ho went to England with Shackelton in 1909, and there produced “Heart of the Antarctio,” but the second book, “South,” was written m New Zealand under circumstances which only his indpmitable industry, and his unrivalled knowledge of Shackelton and his methods, could have mastered. Mr Saunders leaves a wife and four young children.
