v fixtures. Deo. 15—Waipa (Te Awatnutu) R.C. Annual. Dec. 16—Rotorua R.C.. at Te Awamutu. Dec. 26—Porangahau It.C. Dec. 26, 27—Dunedin XCDec. 26, 27—Westland x^C. Dec. 26. 27—Taranaki J.C. Dec. 26* 28, Jan. 1. 2—Auckland R.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By "Carbine/’) A very big team of men is engaged on the nevr stand at Trentham, and tne work is being pushed on with all possible speed. It is understood that the Wellingtonowned Martial Dawn will be ridden in t)he Auckland Cup by H. Wiggins Hv Cairns, who is coming over from Australia for the holiday meetings in New Zealand, will have the mount on Insurrection in. the Auckland Cup. Word was received in Wellington yesterday that Blue Sox, who had been taken up from Trentham to race at Te Awamutu, pulled up badly yesterday morning. In the circumstances the Trentham gelding must be regarded as an unlikely starter at this week s iqMMuraahi. who ran third in the New Zealand Cup and is fancied for the Auckland Cup, is to be ridden by L. Pine. Mr Harold Brown arrived in Wellington from Sydney yesterday. An interesting trial was run the other morning when Foo Chow, Royal Star, and Palestrina, all of whom are engaged in. the Auckland Cun, were sent a mile and a quarter together. 'The first halfmile was covered in 52 l-ssec, and the three wore together. Palestrina then went to the front, and Royal Star fell back last. The seven furlongs took lmin 52 l-ssec, the mile lmin 46 2-ssee, and the full journey 2min 15sec. Palestrina was first to finish, several lengths ahead of Foo Chow, who was just ahead of Royal Star. Palestrina had about 101 b the worst of the weights. Glentruin reeled off 6ix furlongs in lmin 15 l-sseo the same morning, which was much better time than any of the other sprinters were making. The effect of the recent general election on the future of racing is a subject to which supporters of the sport might well give more than passing consideration. One cannot tell with much certainty yet, but on looks the House will bo better than its predecessor in the respect under consideration. More than one enemy of the pastime which the King 'honours and participates in has gone out of politics, and it is understood that several of the new members are not unfriendly. Director, the two-year-old colt by Nassau from Culross 'has been sold by Mr G. R, Stead to his brother. Mr W. G. Stead. Director, who to date has started four times for one second and one third, will be seen out shortly under his new owner's colours.

According to the Melbourne "Leader,” First Water still holds the record ss the heaviest-hacked horse that ever contested the Melbourne Cup. That la to say, the horse named was baoked by his party for more money than any other horse; not that the money invested on him -was the greatest, for the money obtained about First Water was secured at very long- odds. It is a known fact that the party behind First Water held the ring liable -for .£105,000 in connection with the Melbourne Cup of 1883, andxthe great stake was nearly landed, for the Bouth Australian horse defeated all his field with the exception of Mar-tini-Henry. While being indulged in swimming exercise (says an Auckland writer), Hyginas and Callaghan gave their attendants a hit of a fright. The last-named did not make any attempt bo swim, hut i Hyginas struck out all right till he uot. very tired and had to be assisted in hy those in the hoat.,. The pair were got back to the beach;' all right, and are none the worse for their experience. Racegoers present_ at races held at Warwick - (Etaglarici) on November 20th were spectators of an nnoommon and painful sight. The candidates for the shipston Plate were at the startingpost, and were about to be sent on their journey when Chuckapenny savagely snapped at the arm of Smyth, rider of Shandon Bells. The animal buried his teeth in the jookey’s arm, and, despite vigorous punishment, held on with bulldog tenacity. The unfortunate rider, suffering agonising pain, was dragged out, of hio saddle, and when ultimately released it was found that his wrist was severely torn on both sides. Stitches were inserted in the wounds, and inoculation was considered necessary. After the inoident had closed, Chuokapenny took pat# In the race and dead-heated with Eton for firet place. P. Riddle’s Australian team, which reached Auckland from Sydney last month, comprises Clarrie Holy. Minton Derby, Argus, £#t, Lucia Lad. The Sheik, and Grand Rapids. With the exception of the last-named, all are pacers. On June 12th Clarrie Daly won the Flying Handicap at Bpping in a mile rate of 2min 12lseo, while Minton Derby, a five-year-old black son of Mambrino Derby and Mignonette, won at Upping on July 18th in a mile rate of 2min 1-ljsee. Grand Rapids is an aged bay horse by Direct Wilkes from Dorrie, 1 and The Shiek a six-ye&r-old horse by Bonnio Chief from Francesca. St. Lucia Lad, who is a brown horse by Franz from Dorothy Bee, won the First Brisbane Thousand in 1919, and Argus, a gelded son of Mambrino Derby and Redwing, won the Flying Handicap at Epping on September 18th in a little faster than 2mjn 16sec to the mile.
