GUILTY OF THEFT
CHARGES AGAINST A CONSTABLE Per Press Association. HAMILTON. December 13. At the Supreme Court Henry Thomas Smith, lato constable and clerk of the court at Kawhia, was charged with having committed twelve thefts, nine of them being in respect to moneys paid into the court, and three others iu regard to the alleged disappearance of certain articles from the Kawhia wharf. Smith was indicted before a jury of twelve to answer two of the charges, and the other cases are to be taken later in batches of two or three. Evidence was given that money paid to accused had not been acknowledged, and after a retirement for half an-hour the jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the laxity of the audit and the 6tigma cast on his family. Sentence was deforred.
