TAXATION PROPOSALa IMMIGRATION TAX. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received December 8, 9.55 p.m.) SUVA, December 8. The Legislative Council is sitting. The taxation committee recommended fresh taxation of £1 per head annually on male residents, excluding Fijians, between the ages of 16 and 60 years, who are British subjects or of European descent, or South Pacific Islanders; and a tax of £6 on other males, reducible to £2 when they are engaged in agriculture or public works; and also that non-European non-Bri-tish immigrants pay an immigration fee of £SO before landing. The recommendations are not approved by the Secretary for State, and the elected members unanimously protest. The committee also recommended a tax of i per cent, on exports, and of 1 per cent, on imports.
