NAVY LEAGUE

WELLINGTON BRANCH EXECUTIVE. VISIT OF FRENCH WARSHIP. A meeting of the executive of the Wellington branch of the Navy League was held yesterday afternoon, Mr A. F. Roberta occupying the chair. Advice was received that as the result of a small bazaar organised by the Island Bay School fifty children of the home would bo able to join the league. In. connection with th© endowment fund a letter was received from London asking for assistance. This was referred to the finance committee, the chairman remarking that in his opinion the AVellington branch had enough to do to look after its own administration. “We can do with every penny we can get,” added Mr Roberta. The secretary announced that two French warships would arrive in Wellington on January 16th, and would depart x>n January 21st. No details were available as to what vessels were coming, but this information would be available when the Frenoh Consul returned from Auckland. v On .the motion of the chairman it was decided to inform the Mayor of Wellington that the branch would 00-operate in any entertainment for the men’s benefit. ' Mr O. W. Palmer announced that the wreath of New Zealand foliage which was sent by the Wellington branch of the Navy League in August appeared in its block of ice at the base of the Nelson Monument (Trafalgar square) on Nelson Day, and attracted a lot of attention. Mr Oscar Borer, wearing the New Zealand fern-loßf badge, was present part of the time, and was able to explain to tho onlookers how these New Zealand flowers bad been picked the previous February. Admiral Sir Lionel Halsey, writing from St. James’s Palace to a Nevy League member, said: “Tly idea .of the wreath is a delightful one, and is an "eve-opener to the Old Country as to the interest taken by the Dominion of New Zealand in the navy. To my mind interest- in the navy is all. the more necessary at this particular time.”
