“Pussyfoot” Johnson FLOORED AGAIN! Calls Canadian Soldiers “Rats and Vermin” A CABLE FROM Mr. C. A. WINDLE: Pussyfoot Johnson a wefek ago in the Wellington Town Hall referred to Mr. C. A. Windle, the Chicago editor of the Iconoclast, who was quoted tin a Continuance advertisement. Mr. Johnson denounced this gentleman as a Pro-German, and quoted alleged extracts from his writings to prove the charge. 1 The following cable was despatched to Mr. Windle on November 30 : "Pussyfoot Johnson states you have Pro-German Anti-British sympathies has published as evidence extracts your writings Iconoclast denouncing British. Is this *true ?" i / Here’s Mr. Windle’s Reply A' CABLEGRAM. Chicago, December 2nd, 1922. The man who mutilates public records and garbles the Bible, would distort the Iconoclast. Mv characterization of true civilisation as van Angel and the false civilisation as an old Hag applies to no individual nation. Johnson's unwarranted application of my ! words to England makes him guilty of insult ‘charged against me. I was never pro-German and am proud that my son volunteered at Kingston, Ontario, Canada. In 1921 Johnson called soldier-hecklers "Rats and Vermin" and for this insult the veterans at Windsor literally chased him out of Canada. I confuted same charges and was never interrupted at mymeetings. I have certainly criticised some American and British policies but deny that this makes me a traitor to America or an enemy of England. , I support Free State policy and am branded by the editor of the "Irish World” as "the tool of British propaganda." Fact of Illinois going '.‘wet” at recent election by 526,000 majority frightens the "Drys" and sounds the death-knell of Prohibition in America. (Signed) WINDLE. A Campaign of Calumny! Since his arrival in New Zealand Pussyfoot Johnsdn has pursued a policy of attempting to besmirch the character of every prominent man who has expressed any opinion against Prohibition. Pussyfoot never replies to criticisms—he side-steps into, personalities every time. What a Missionary! Such is the man who hopes to make New Zealand '‘dry". A man who came without a single sound argument for Prohibition, a man who slandered our soldiers in Dunedin; whose entire armoury consists of the cry of "lies!" and a never-ceasing barrage of mud-slinging. Canada ha* chased him over her borders: Scotland rejected him; England laughed at him. New Zealand has had enough of him! VOTE CONTINUANCE Council of tM Licensed Trad? of New Zealand 94 • •
