A POSSIBLE SOLUTION
HUTT & PETONE BOROUCHS NEW DISTRICT BOARD TO TAKE OVER CONTROL. LIGHTING THE DISTRICT. The Petone Borough Council was informed last night by the Hutt and Petone Gas Lighting Board that it was prepared to take over the street lighting and maintenance in both boroughs, the councils paying for the gas consumed. The board also proposed that the maintenance work should be dono at actual cost, plus 10 per cent. The •price for gas was fixed at 7s lid per 1000 cubic feet net. The Mayor (Mr W. J. McEwan): The position is: What will it cost us? In the past the cost to the council-had amounted to £7OO. A councillor: I do not think, tve wSuld be any better off. Mr A. Cowie (engineer): They have the staff, and we have net. The Mayor: That is so. The only question is whether they are entitled to the 10 per cent. Councillor Pere thought, if the board did this work, it should be on an ordinary contract basis. The Mayor: We could ask the hoard to reconsider it if the arrangement should prove too expensive. The offer; was accepted. A POSSIBLE SOLUTION HUTT 'AND PETONE BOROUGHS. “Thie is the gas report, and the last one you will get,” said the Mayor of Petone (Mr J. W. McEwan), at last night’s pieeting of the Borough Council, referring to forthcoming activities on the part of the recently-constructed Hutt and Petone Gae and Lighting Board. “We might go bankrupt, and be very glad to take this on again,’’ replied a councillor. “No, I do not think that is likely,” said the Mayor. “The only thing likely to upset us is amalgamation of the two boroughs.” “And a very good solution,” observed Councillor A. Henderson.
