FROM CANADA

MINISTER FOR CUSTOMS TO ARRANGE RECIPROCAL TARIFF WITH AUSTRALIA. CONFERS WITH N.Z. MINISTERS.

A member of the Mackenzie King Government in Canada, the Minister for Trade and Commerce, the Hon. James A Itohb, on rout© to Australia, with Mrs Robb and the Minister’s private secretary, Mr M-. J. Cullen, was among the list of passengers on the s.s. Makura, who touched at New Zealand going over. He i® going to Australia in response to an invitation from the Commonwealth. Government to the Prime Minister of the big Dominion to ■send a representative there to discuss the possibility of a reciprocal trade tariff between the two countries. Canada, said Mr Robb, like all British Dominions, suffered from the great world war in which all parts of the Empire played such a splendid part. But Canada has turned the corner. There is now work for all who are willing to work, and greater development is expected next year. The harvest just gathered has been a good average in ail of the nine provinces, considerable building is under way, and Canadian industries are mostly all running full time. The Canadian dollar, which was a year ago 15 per cent, discount, is now par: indeed, in September, Canadian dollars were at a premium over the United States currency. The Canadian Minister was glad to know that the increasing travel and freight between the Southern British Dominions and Canada was such as to warrant tbe Union Steamship Company enlarging their excellent service. The new and commodious vessel recently ordered, as announced by Mr Holdsworth, will, in the opinion of Mr Robb, make _ the Australian-New ZealandGanadian route favourite between the Motherland and the overseas Dominions.

It is understood that during Mr Robb s brief sfcav in New Zealand he conferred with Dominion Ministers on the greater development of trade within the Empire ana the question of greater reciprocity between Canada and New Zealand.
