RUGBY REFEREES

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION MEETS. Mr.A-.B- Neilson (chairman) presided at last night’s meeting-ofi the-Welling-ton Rugby Referees’ Association. On the recommendation of the executive, a member of the association whose .conduct has been unsatisfactory* and who has persistently refused to answer correspondence, was suspended during the pleasure of the association. It was decided to ask' the Rugby Union to submit the names of six junior referees for the junior representative match on Saturday. THE WING-FQRWARD. An interesting discussion took place on the wing-forward, it being generally considered he was no worse than the breakaway forwards in the countries where the wing-forward was objected to. It was decided to hold the last meeting of the.season on Monday next, when members* expenses would be paid out. Mr Peake, the chairman of the Canterbury. Referees’ Association, was present, and was given a cordial welcome by the chairman. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY SENIOR. Wanganui v. Wellington, Athletic Far*. 3 p.m.; referee, A. E. Neilson. TO MEET WELLINGTON STRONG OTAGO TEAM. ran rasas xssociATiott. DUNEDIN, September 4 The following Rugby team will represent Otago against Wellington on Saturday '• — Full-back, Bell. Three-quarters, Owles, Murray, Stewart. Five-eighths, Townsend, Dickinson. Half, Mathieson. Forwards, Coombes. McMeeking, Sonntag, Williams, Richardson, Duncan (captain), Knox; wing-forward, Wilson. Reserves—Backs, Watson, Mackereth, McNaughton. Forwards, Thomas, Milne, j LICENSED VICTUALLERS’ CUP PORIRUA (8) v. OTAKI (3). Levin-Wanderers and' Otaki, and Porirua and Levin Rovers were set down to play for the Licensed Victuallers* Cup at Otaki on Saturday, but as neither of the northern teams arrived, Otaki and Porirua met. the former playing under protest. The visitors, a hefty lot, were muoh heavier than the local hoys, and at first it appeared as if a big score would be registered against Otaki. The light blues, despite the absence of four of their best men. played splendidly, and the gome proved one of the best seen looally this season. In the first spell there nan no score, but early in the second half Awanui scored and converted—Porirua, 5; Otaki, 0. Then by some smart play, after a loose rush Araputa scored foT Otaki, but Subritsky failed to convert. Later Katene scored fpr the visitors, but

Wi Neera failed at goal, B—3. From-this to the end of the spell play was or an interesting nature, and Otaki frequently attacked. Once G. Lima grasped the ball from a loose Tush and dived over the line, bat in doing so the ball was kicked, from, his hands. Later fiubritrsky beat 'the opposition; and crossed the line under tne bar, hut a five yard scrum was ordered. Several other times the local men were near scoring, and their attacks were vigorous and full of ginger, lot should have eventuated earlier in the gUffie.

For Otaki most of the hacks did well, while the forwards worked hard. The Porirua vanguard proved a solid lot, tut the hacks were patchy; h«TuiH»g the hall badly. Mr T. Parata was referee. It is probable that Porirua and Rovers (levin) will' play next Saturday, but much depends on the protest.
