THE BALFOUR NOTE
POINCARE’S REPLY ATTACKED. IMPLICATION AGAINST BRITAIN. Australian and N.Z. Cable AreociatUm. LONDON,. September 3. A passage in M. Poincare’s reply to the Balfour Note reads: '"The United States entered the war to defend, the principles which form the basis of civilisation. Britain, like Frtmce, had to safeguard not only her independence and integrity, bfft also her life, property, and means of existence." The implication in this is that Britain lacked America’s high motive. This caused the deepest resentment. An amendment has now been received removing the implication, hut a section of the French Press Utterly attacks the whole tone of M. Poincare’s Note.
