THE CHANNEL SWIM

AMERICANS ABANDON TASK. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association* LONDON, September 3. Sam Richards and Charles Toth, tfvo Americans, started from Dover on Saturday night to swim the Channel. Toth, after eleven hours in the water, abandoned his task when five miles from Cape Gris Nez, owing to strong wind and a heavy sea. Richards abandoned the attempt after he had swum five miles. Tom Morris, an Australian, who was also to have started on Saturday evening did not do so, and Henery Sullivan, another American, has postponed his attempt.
