At Newtown Park on Saturday, before a moderate attendance of spectators, Town, defeated Sydenham (Christchurch!, after a hard, fast, and interesting exposition of the 13-aside code. Town were originally chosen to play Country on Saturday, but late in the week word was received/ ‘ from Christchurch that Sydenham would -b& travelling to Wellington, and it was then, decided that they should toe pitted against Town. However, although Town comprised two or thf.ee local representatives, the Sydenham team, winners of the Christchurch championship, put up a great fight against the local team, and it. was not until the last few minutes that the winning team was known. Town kicked off against the wind, and from the start the game was of a hard and fast nature. The Sydenham -backs handled the ball well, and often, passed between, several men before losing possession-. The passing rushes wore brilliant and -pleasing to the spectators. Shortly after Town were penalised for offside play, and A. Marshall piloted the ball niceiv between the -posts, opening the Sydenham scoring. Sydenham -l, Town 0. The ball travelled: up and down the field- awhile, and Town had the southerners hemmed on their own line.
