(Received September 1, 5.0 p.m.) LONDON, August 31, In connection with the robbery of an American women’s jewels there nave been several similar robberies, though on a smaller scale, recently, proving that an exceptionally clever group of British and Continental thieves is at work, and is controlled by a master-mind. Considerable sums have been expended in carefully shadowing people with valuables. These clever ones haunt society functions. It is believed that the robbery. of the American woman was committed at Calais. The authorities are aware of the existence of a clever gang with headquarters at Deauville, which at present i» crowded with fashionable people of all nations, where thieves, who aro mostly cultured and of good, personal appearance, move in the best society. LONDON, August 31.
The “Evening News” says, in connection with the recent jewellery robberies, that the police possess eridenoo of a vast organisation employing brains, wealth, beauty, and culture, to . achieve its objects. Spies truck the victims, and accomplices obtain engagements with jewel dealers tod merchants in order to keep their principals informed, Sand men renting country houses and expensive motorcars participate. The , claims arising from robberies are so numerous that the underwriters, have been compelled to increase the insurance rates.
